Woodward Boomers – 2021 Pigskin Preview Defense Feature – Presented by AAA Woodward

Woodward Boomers
Head Coach: Rich Leutjen
2020 Recored: 3-8

Defense
The Boomers also return six starters on the defensive side of the ball. Woodward runs a 3-3-5 defense, allowing for a different look than most teams are used to. Hunter is the heart and soul of the defense at the middle linebacker spot. He and outside linebacker Wyatt Pope (6-2, 195, Sr.) will patrol things in the middle of the field, while also picking the right times to blitz. “Wyatt (Pope) is a guy you know who will show up every day ready to work. He’s going to pay attention to the details and is a great example and leader for our younger players,” Luetjen stated. Nose guard Ethan Matt (5-9, 230, Jr.) will try and clog things up for opposing offenses. Matt is a bit undersized for a nose guard but uses his leverage and quickness to get through and around offensive lineman. Laird and Parker Schmitz (5-11, 185, Sr.) will try to lock down opposing receivers from their secondary positions. Woodward assistant coaches include Shane Pinckard, Derrick Luetjen, Cody Whatley, Zach Warner and Kyle Shryock.
