Woodward High School’s Kaelyn Heckart

Woodward High School sophomore Kaelyn Heckart is quickly establishing herself as a versatile and driven varsity athlete, balancing multiple sports while embracing the values that come with competition.

Heckart, who will enter 10th grade this fall, stays active year-round, competing in softball, basketball, track and slow-pitch. Despite the demanding schedule, she remains grounded by the support system around her. “I would say my parents and friends inspire me,” Heckart said. “They always build me up and have the right thing to say.”

On the softball field, Heckart plays center field, a position that requires both athleticism and awareness. She said the most challenging aspect is the amount of ground she must cover, but she approaches each play with focus and confidence. At the plate, her routine is simple but effective. “I take a deep breath, look for my pitch, and trust my swing,” she said.

Team chemistry is a major reason Heckart enjoys competing. She values the bond she shares with her teammates, noting that the group feels more like family than just a roster. “I enjoy getting to be with my girls all the time, whether it’s at practice, games or on bus rides,” she said. “I love how they make this team feel like a family.”

Heckart also appreciates the unique personalities within the team. She described Kaleigh as the most vocal leader, while Tessa “keeps everyone laughing.” She added that Bailey is known for playing hard every game, often ending up the dirtiest on the field.

Beyond athletics, Heckart excels in the classroom, where math is her favorite subject. She credits teachers like Mrs. Clem and Mrs. Madara for making a positive impact on her education.

Through sports, Heckart has learned lessons that extend beyond competition. “Athletics has taught me the value of hard work, to never give up, and to learn from my mistakes,” she said. “I know I will carry these things with me throughout the future.”
