Before the school day begins, Carlie Castor is already thinking about the responsibilities waiting for her in the barn, the classroom, and the Woodward High School FFA chapter. The junior has built her high school experience around agriculture, leadership, and a commitment to doing things the right way.
Castor serves as the chapter reporter, shows pigs and competes in career development events, including veterinary science and livestock judging. Her involvement began with encouragement from her older brother, who had been part of FFA before her.
“My brother was in FFA, and he really encouraged me to join, and ever since then I never looked back!”
Her experiences have given Castor more than opportunities to compete. They have helped her develop confidence, responsibility, and respect, qualities she works to reflect when representing Woodward and its community.
“Representing my school and community through FFA means showing confidence, responsibility, and respect in everything I do while being someone others can look up to.”
One of Castor’s favorite FFA memories came during the chapter officer retreat in Red River, New Mexico, this past June. She also counts making the sale at the Oklahoma Youth Expo last spring among the defining moments of her career.
“The biggest highlight moment of my career would have to be making the sale at OYE this last spring. I can’t even describe how grateful and excited I was.”
Although she does not participate in school sports, Castor stays busy as the NHS reporter and class vice president. Her motivation comes from her family, her supporters, and her passion for agriculture.
“What motivates me is my love for agriculture, my family, and the people who support me. I want to keep learning, working hard, and making the people around me proud while becoming the best version of myself.”
Castor credits Papa Bud, Mrs. Clem, and Mrs. Wiezbrod with helping shape her outlook. Their lessons have reminded her that growth requires effort, humility, and perseverance.
“Being successful in FFA has taken hard work, dedication, responsibility, and a willingness to learn. It has also taken stepping out of my comfort zone, staying committed, and being willing to try new things. And blood, sweat, and tears (literally).”
