Athlete Spotlight with Woodward’s Ella Howard – Presented by Stock Exchange Bank

Ella Howard approaches every game for Woodward High School with a purpose: improve, compete and represent her teammates, school and community the right way.

The junior plays left field for the Woodward softball team and shooting guard for the basketball program, balancing two demanding sports while maintaining the steady approach that has helped her become a dependable teammate.

“What motivates me is wanting to keep getting better and making my family proud. I always want to work hard, improve my skills, and be someone my teammates can count on,” Howard said.

That drive showed in one of the most memorable moments of her softball season. Against rival Elk City, Woodward found itself tied in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out and runners on second and third. Howard stepped to the plate and delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home the winning run.

“One of my biggest highlights this year was playing Elk City. We were tied in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out and runners on second and third. I hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored the winning run. It was a really exciting moment, especially because Elk City is one of our big rivals,” Howard said.

The matchup carried extra meaning for Howard because of the rivalry between the two programs.

“Elk City, because they are one of our biggest rivals. Games against them are always competitive and exciting, so getting a win against them means a lot,” Howard said.

Howard said her success has required dedication, commitment, and the willingness to learn through difficult moments. Whether she is tracking down a ball in left field or creating an opportunity as a shooting guard, she works to remain focused on the next play.

“It has taken a lot of dedication and commitment. I have had to stay focused and learn from my mistakes,” Howard said.

Her support system includes her father, who has encouraged her throughout her athletic career, as well as Mrs. Zimmerman, a teacher who has helped her build confidence in the classroom.

“My dad is one of my biggest influences because he is always there for me no matter what. He supports me through everything and always encourages me to keep working hard and never give up,” Howard said.

Howard also values the relationships built through athletics. She enjoys working alongside teammate Kaelyn Heckhart, and she believes teammate Preslea Morales deserves recognition for her versatility and willingness to fill any role needed by the team.

For Howard, wearing Woodward across her uniform is about more than individual performance.

“It means a lot to me because I know I am representing more than just myself. I want to represent Woodward High School and my community positively by working hard, supporting my teammates, and giving my best effort every time I play,” Howard said.
