Before the starter’s signal cuts through the air, Kennedy Roach has already put in the work. Whether she is logging miles for cross country, competing on the track, chasing a soccer ball or taking the basketball court, the Woodward High School junior approaches every sport with the same commitment and determination.
Roach is a four-sport athlete who thrives on staying active and challenging herself in different settings. The demands of balancing basketball, soccer, track and cross country can be significant, but she has learned that success starts with consistency.
“What it has taken for me to be successful in sports is commitment; once I put in the work, I started seeing results,” Roach said.
Her teammates are a major source of that drive. They give Roach added motivation to improve in the sports that mean the most to her and help create an environment where athletes push one another to reach higher.
“My teammates motivate me to try harder in the things I’m most passionate about,” she said.
Roach also credits her classmates as important influences in her life. Their example has encouraged her to set bigger goals and pursue accomplishments that once may have seemed beyond reach.
“My biggest influences are my classmates helping me to achieve more than I thought I was capable of achieving.”
One of the most memorable achievements of Roach’s high school career came in cross country, when she qualified for the state meet. Reaching that stage represented the work she had invested, as well as the support she received from the people around her.
“The highlight moment of my career is making it to state in my high school years, competing in cross country with the help and support of my teammates and family,” Roach said.
In practice, Roach enjoys competing against teammate Brayan Lopez, whose presence pushes her to keep improving.
“The person I like competing against in practice most is my teammate Brayan Lopez because he pushes me to be the best athlete I can be,” Roach said.
Roach carries that same focus into the classroom. She knows representing Woodward well means maintaining strong standards both as a student and an athlete.
