Woodward’s Nikkol Traver-Athlete Spotlight-Presented by Great Plains Bank

Nikkol Traver’s athletic life is built on balance, between the fearless precision of pole vaulting and the energy, leadership, and trust required in varsity cheer. A senior at Woodward High School, Traver embraces both challenges while serving as captain of the cheer team.

In track and field, Traver competes as a pole vaulter, an event that demands confidence, technique, and the willingness to keep pushing past uncertainty. Her cheer experience has strengthened many of those same qualities, helping her grow into a more assured athlete and person.

“Cheer has changed me in so many ways,” Traver said. “It has helped me build confidence and self-esteem, step outside of my comfort zone, and become much more comfortable putting myself out there and meeting new people. It has also taught me the importance of trust, teamwork, dedication, and encouraging the people around me.”

Becoming cheer captain stands as one of Traver’s proudest accomplishments. The role represents more than a title; it reflects the effort she has invested in becoming a dependable teammate and leader.

“I am most proud of becoming captain of my varsity cheer team,” Traver said. “I worked hard to grow not only as an athlete, but also as a leader and teammate. Being chosen as captain showed me that my hard work, dedication, and commitment to my team were noticed, and I am incredibly grateful for it.”

Traver credits former cheer captain Vaneza with leaving a lasting impact early in her high school career. She also draws inspiration from her older sister, Sasha, whose perseverance continues to shape Traver’s outlook.

“Be yourself, be confident, and be kind,” Traver said. “Those three things have stuck with me because being true to yourself, believing in yourself, and treating others with kindness can take you a long way.”

She is grateful for the support surrounding her, including her family, coaches, Alyssa Barnett, and Russell Fewel. Traver also appreciates Mr. Greeff, a teacher she says brings passion and enjoyment into the classroom while making learning accessible.
