At the range, success is measured in focus, preparation and the confidence to improve with every shot. For Woodward High School senior Audry Harris, shooting sports has become much more than an extracurricular activity, it has given her an opportunity to grow, compete and represent her community with pride through FFA.
Harris is a member of the Woodward FFA chapter, where she serves as chapter chaplain and participates in the shooting sports program. Her decision to become involved began with a familiar influence.
“My brother helped me decide to join FFA because he was a part of it too and loved it, so I eventually joined and loved it as well!”
That decision has led to memorable accomplishments, including one that stands above the rest. Harris said her favorite FFA memory came last season when she and her teammates reached the top of the trap competition.
“Winning state in trap last season!”
While shooting sports is the only sport Harris participates in, the activity has taught her the value of commitment. She understands that improvement does not happen instantly, especially in a sport requiring consistency, patience and attention to detail.
“It has taken lots of time and energy and a willingness to focus on what I can improve on as well as taking the steps to do so.”
Harris credits her parents as two of the biggest role models in her life. Their lessons about work ethic, perseverance and character continue to shape the way she approaches competition and everyday life.
“Representing my school and community means setting a good example for younger people as well as people outside of our community.”
She also appreciates the support of her agriculture teachers, Mr. Dixon and Mr. Washmon, who have encouraged her to keep learning through FFA.
“Both Mr. Dixon and Mr. Washmon have made a huge impact on my life. They have been my ag teachers and have made me want to come back every year and see what more I can learn from them.”
Looking ahead, Harris hopes to pursue a future in medicine after earning her CNA license. Her motivation remains rooted in helping others, staying close to family and friends, and continuing to better herself.
