Woodward High School’s Bailey Nelson
Woodward High School senior Bailey Nelson brings consistency, grit and leadership to both the softball diamond and basketball court, shaped by the influence of a coach she sees year-round.
Nelson, a multisport athlete, credits assistant coach Jones as her biggest inspiration. Coaching her in both basketball and softball, Jones’ approach has left a lasting impact.
“Because I play both sports under him, I get to see his leadership style year round,” Nelson said. “Seeing his dedication motivates me to bring that same energy to every practice or game.”
As a catcher, Nelson embraces one of the most demanding positions on the field. She said blocking balls in the dirt is the toughest part of her role, but her aggressive style defines her play.
“I probably have the dirtiest uniform after a game,” she said. “I like to dive for balls, and on the bases I prefer diving because I can see the tag path better.”
Her preparation at the plate reflects that same attention to detail. Nelson follows a “yes, yes, no” approach, focusing on timing, pitch recognition and field awareness before committing to her swing.
Beyond individual performance, Nelson values the connections built through athletics.
“What I enjoy most is building friendships, learning how to work together and celebrating big moments,” she said.
She points to teammates Kaleigh Mills, the most vocal leader, and Ella Howard, who keeps the team loose, as key contributors to team chemistry. Former teammate Yadira Reyes also left a lasting impression.
“No matter what, she was always smiling,” Nelson said.
A senior who favors English over math, Nelson said teacher Mrs. Madara has had the greatest impact in the classroom because of her personal investment in students.
Off the field, Nelson spends time at the movies, the lake or playing volleyball with friends.
She also gives back through community service, supporting organizations such as Crystal Christmas and the Hope Center.
Nelson said athletics has taught her lessons that extend far beyond competition.
“You have to take care of the inside so the outside can do what it’s supposed to,” she said. “It also teaches you how to be resilient.”
