OFFENSE
The Woodward Boomers offense will look to spread things out this season offensively with six starters returning for third year head coach Rick Luetjen. The Boomers will have plenty of underclassmen playing this season. Junior quarterback Sam Cheap (5-10, 165) will be under center for the Boomers. Cheap will look to target fellow junior receiver Taelen Laird (6-3, 180), who uses his size and speed well to highpoint the football over defenders. Laird is an exceptional multi-sport athlete for Woodward, and coach Leutjen will use him all over the field. The Boomers run a one back spread offense, combining some run, pass, option elements, looking to get the ball in their best athletes’ hands. “Our philosophy is to run an offense that fits the talent that we have each year, and we feel that a spread approach will give us the best opportunity to put points on the board,” said Leutjen. When the Boomers need a first down or in short yardage situations, they have their go-to guy in halfback Nash Hunter (5-10, 250, Sr.). “Nash (Hunter) is the heart and soul of this team. He was born to play football and is exceptionally athletic for his size,” Leutjen said. Nash and sophomore running back Denzal Emery (5-10, 165) will try and find holes behind offensive guard Damian Chavez (6-2, 350, Sr.), who uses a rare combination of size and good footwork to move out defenders.
