Woodward’s “Fab Five” – Presented by T4 Consulting

When it comes to high school athletics, the rise of a gifted freshman class could signal big things ahead. The ‘Fab Five Freshman’s’ ascent to prominence on the basketball court at Woodward High School has demonstrated such promise. These five young athletes, Colt Moore, Jake Graf, Luke Talley, Jesse Treece and Cole Reid, have been making noise on the court since their early days, guided by coach Kala Gaines.

Gaines, a seasoned mentor with an eye for talent, has been instrumental in nurturing the growth of these budding basketball stars. Reflecting on what sets the Fab Five Freshman apart from other freshman players she’s coached in the past, Gaines emphasizes their innate chemistry: “You can tell that they have played with each other from a young age. They have good team chemistry.”

The journey of these young athletes began in second grade, where they first showcased their potential on the court. Gaines recalls watching them play during their Kids Inc. days and recognizing their talent and quickness even then. Now, as their coach at Woodward High School, she sees their continued growth and potential. “They have grown and continued showing this same potential. I look forward to helping them continue developing onto the next level.”

Individually, each member of the Fab Five brings unique strengths to the team. From Colt Moore’s defensive prowess to Jake Graf’s court vision and Luke Talley’s versatility, Gaines highlights their contributions: “What makes them so special again is the chemistry they have with each other. Knowing what each other is going to do and reading their defense and being creative.”

However, with great talent comes great expectations. As the future of Woodward boys basketball, the Fab Five Freshman carry the weight of anticipation and pressure. “It’s a lot of pressure.” Yet, Gaines remains committed to providing them with the tools and opportunities to thrive: “I just hope they are willing to put in the work, because that’s what’s going to matter the most.”

Looking ahead, Gaines envisions the Fab Five shaping the culture and dynamics of Woodward basketball. Through their defensive tenacity and refusal to quit when faced with adversity, they set a standard of excellence for future teams to emulate.

As for their development, Gaines emphasizes a holistic approach, focusing on areas such as shooting, strength, speed and finishing at the rim. Through dedicated coaching and hard work, she aims to help them reach their full potential.

Gaines hopes that their journey inspires younger players to recognize the importance of teamwork and resilience in achieving success. With their story still unfolding, the future of Woodward basketball indeed looks bright, guided by the vision and leadership of Kala Gaines and her remarkable young athletes.
