Role models play an important role in most people’s lives. They can influence what path they take in life, what job, and even what kind of person they become. For some, role models are someone that they see from a distance on television or in the movies, while they may be a little closer to home for others. De’tynne Lewis is one whose role model is a little closer to home.
“My dad is my biggest role model,” she said. “I look up to him in so many ways. I would not be the person or athlete I am today without him.”
Lewis is a senior at Woodward High School. She plays softball and basketball for the Lady Boomers. She has the ability to play anywhere needed on the softball field, while she plays the forward and post positions on the basketball court. De’tynne is no stranger to either sport as she first played both when she was five years old.
While playing two different varsity sports, Lewis knows that her skill and ability did not just happen one day. Instead, she has had to do a lot in order to get where she is.
“It has taken lots of hardwork for me to be the player that I am today,” she said. “Also, a lot of patience, time, and a good mindset has all helped shape me.”
Lewis has enjoyed many great memories during her athletic career, but she says that there is one memory that stands out as her favorite.
“The highlight moment of my career is an easy choice,” she said. “It would have to be when our softball team had the opportunity to host Regionals during my sophomore year. It was a pretty cool experience.”
As a student at Woodward, De’tynne has sat through many lessons taught by a variety of teachers. But she says that her favorite was a junior high teacher.
“Ms. Stewart was my seventh and eighth-grade history teacher,” she said. “She and I created a special bond within those two years that I will cherish forever.”
Outside of athletics, De’tynne is also a member of the Pep Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
