Woodward’s Max Cheap – Woodward Spotlight -Presented by Great Plains Bank of Woodward

Originally published January 20, 2020

Max Cheap is a senior at Woodward High School where he has been quite busy throughout his tenure as a Boomer, competing in football, basketball, and track and field.

Cheap was the leading wide receiver on the football team, catching passes from his younger brother, Sam, who is the sophomore quarterback.

On the hardwood, Cheap leads the basketball team at guard. Cheap has started all four years for the Boomers, making an impact early on in his career after hitting a game winner at the buzzer during his freshman season.

“Some of my best memories were made playing basketball, and I am thankful we get the opportunity to play this year,” Cheap said.

This season, Cheap has led the Boomers’ run-and-gun offense to a 5-1 start. The Boomers finished second as the host of the Woodward Compass Winter Classic with Cheap being one of two Boomers to make the All-Tournament team.

Cheap has played basketball for 10 years, and the work he’s put in throughout that time hasn’t come easy. But the obstacles haven’t stopped him from reaching a lot of his goals. Cheap hopes to add another goal this season by leading the Boomers to the state tournament for the first time since 2011.

Cheap credits his grandfather as a big influence toward his work ethic throughout his athletic career.

“My grandad is one of my biggest role models,” Cheap said. “He played college football, and not only was he a good football player, but he was an even better person. He is who I strive to be like.”

Cheap would also like to thank a couple of his teachers for pushing him in the classroom.

“My third grade teacher Mrs. Lucas and my eleventh grade English teacher, Mrs. Spicer, both encouraged me and made me a better writer,” Cheap said.

Outside of athletics, Cheap is a part of National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Pep Club.
